Christchurch rider Justin Leov (Yeti/Fox Factory Team) won the 3rd round of the Subaru South Island downhill mountainbike series held on the rugged Kaka Hill course near Nelson but he had a tense wait as the fastest qualifier, national champion Kieran Bennett of Nelson, started last on the 440m vertical track.
Leov won Sunday's race in a time of 3min 2.58sec from Nathan Rankin who finished in 3min 3.07sec while Matt Scoles of Alexandra was third in 3min 10.09sec. But it was fastest qualifier Bennett who put the frighteners on the rest of the field when he started tearing up the rock-covered Kaka Hill single track on the final run.
Bennett appeared to be on target to threaten Leov's time when he crashed at a jump near the bottom of the course, before finishing fourth in 3min 11.03sec.
"I would have been close to the winning time," Bennett lamented. "It was a good run until I crashed. I don't really know what happened. I hit a jump at the bottom and landed and then all of a sudden I was over the handle bars - the bike landed on top of me and went into some bushes and it took about 10 seconds to get it back."
Leov was happy to have the win.
"This course was really world class, and if you weren't careful, it could bring you down. It was tough finding the balance to stay upright yet be fast enough to win. I was really happy to have kept the Yeti bike upright and score a win today".
